Geneva Challenge winning project: Fostering social impact in developing countries via novel social networks

The Geneva Challenge is an annual contest that encourages master students to bridge the gap between their studies and real development policy by devising innovative and practical proposals for effecting change. The Challenge was created by Swiss Ambassador Jenö Staehelin under the patronage of late Kofi Annan. In 2020, three SSE MSc in International Business students alongside an MSc Autonomous System student from KTH won the European round of the Geneva challenge with their innovative digital app GerBound. The app directly connects the Mongolian diaspora with opportunities to financially support Mongolian community impact projects that tackle multidimensional poverty, climate change and interconnected socio-economic issues.

This lunchtime session will start with a short presentation of GerBound, followed by a discussion with three of the founders who will share their motivation and journey to developing the app.

Speakers and project founders:

  • Zelmeg Otgontogoo is an MSc International Business student at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden. Born and raised in Germany, with his parents originally coming from Mongolia, he is passionate about contributing towards solving the challenges faced by the people living in Mongolia. Before the start of his Master’s, Zelmeg studied abroad in the US and Finland and worked in the field of consulting in Germany and Hong Kong.
  • Julius Tebrügge is an MSc International Business student at the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden. Passionate about the chances of digital learning, Julius previously worked for a media company in New York, where he supported investments in the field of education technology. During his Bachelor’s degree, Julius studied in the Netherlands and Singapore
  • Thomas Weikert is an MSc Autonomous System student at KTH, Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Previously working for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, supporting European enterprises to set up a business in Developing and Emerging Markets, Thomas has developed a passion for development work and empowering local communities.
